About the Role 


We have an amazing full-time opportunity for an enthusiastic and innovative Retail Design Manager based in Laverton, Victoria. You will deliver innovative retail designs to industry best practices for Metcash Food & Grocery retailers through effective management and co-ordination between Metcash, the Retailer and the Developer. You will be reporting to the National Retail Development Manager.


What you’ll do 

  • Able to design, draft and document new and refurbishment supermarket fit-outs from inception to completion for our independent retailers in consultation with internal and external stakeholders to the brief, budget and Metcash requirements.  Manage the review and approval of all projects efficiently and quickly, following internal best practices, processes, and standards.
  • Review and comment on design documentation provided by developers and independent retailers to offer the best outcome for the supermarket – holistic review to include but not limited to customer/stock access points, car park layout, external signage plans and site sightlines and able to co-ordinate all internal/external design and construction documents to ensure compatibility with approved store fit-out requirements.
  • Strong working knowledge of supermarket requirements relating to equipment, joinery, flow, layout, operations, food prep/safety, services (MEP), regulatory/statutory (BCA/NCC/DDA and Australian Standards) and ensure adherence to all relevant regulatory/statutory requirements, company standards, and compatibility with the tenancy.  Consultation and co-ordination of store design with external consultants, including but not limited to Developers, Architects, Engineers, Building Surveyors, Disability Access Consultants.
  • Undertake site meetings/investigations (including detailed site audits, measure-ups and photo reports) and produce high quality Existing Conditions, Feasibility Sketches, Concept Plans and presentation drawings for development proposals/stakeholder approvals. Produce suitable tender and construction drawings as required.
  • Strong ability to analyse Space and make recommendations to optimise our store estate, improve functionality (customer experience as well as store operations) and financial performance. Draw accurate and practical conclusions from data analyses to inform store layout design decisions and deliver customer-centric store layouts.


What you’ll bring 


  • Must hold current VBA registration – Building Design (Architectural or Interior) and relevant tertiary qualifications in Architectural or Interior Design. Creative, Teamwork and time management skills are essential.
  • Minimum five years experience in supermarket/food convenience retail design and documentation is essential - retail design experience preferably within a similar role.
  • High working knowledge in Autodesk Revit and AutoCAD essential – Competence in Revit family creation will be advantageous.
  • Competence in Sketch Up or similar presentation software and demonstrated presentation skills. Must be able to show portfolio of relevant works (2D/3D) indicating design and documentation and competence in Microsoft based software and Adobe Creative Suite experience (Photoshop or similar) will be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Australian Standards, NCC building regulations and food safety standards, supermarket design methodologies and design processes.
