About the Opportunity 

Exciting new opportunity within our central legal team, for a Senior Legal Counsel. This role will provide legal advice and support to our Food & Liquor pillars, specialising in consumer law and marketing, (along with other general commercial legal matters).

In this Role 

•    Legal Advisory (Consumer Law & Marketing): Provide expert legal advice on consumer law, marketing, and general commercial matters for Metcash Food & Liquor, and occasionally across the broader Metcash Group.
•    Contract Management: Draft, review, and negotiate commercial contracts with retailers, suppliers, and service providers.
•    Regulatory Compliance: Advise on compliance with consumer protection laws and advertising standards, including online and social media marketing regulations.
•    Compliance Frameworks: Support the design and implementation of legal compliance frameworks and processes within Metcash Food & Liquor.
•    Disputes & Investigations: Manage and support disputes, litigation, and regulatory investigations related to consumer law and marketing matters.
•    Risk Management & Legal Updates: Assist in identifying legal and regulatory risks, support risk mitigation efforts, and contribute to legal updates and briefings for internal stakeholders.

You’re Likely a Match If 

•    Hold an LLB (or equivalent) and a current NSW practicing certificate.
•    Minimum of 8 years post-qualification experience (PQE) in private practice and/or in-house legal roles.
•    Experience with FMCG industry would be high regarded
•    Strong skills in contract law, transactional matters, and general commercial legal practice.
•    In-depth understanding of consumer and advertising law and regulation in Australia (and other jurisdictions where applicable), particularly relating to Consumer Law and Marketing.
•    Ability to provide strategic legal support that balances commercial goals with risk management; proactively identifies and solves problems.
•    Proven ability to influence and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
•    Delivers timely legal support, manages competing priorities effectively, and ensures fast and efficient execution of legal matters.
•    Takes full responsibility for legal matters, ensuring high-quality, practical, and business-focused legal advice and outcomes across the Metcash group.
