Let’s talk about you
Reporting to the Senior SHE Manager, this role is responsible for leading the SHE function for the Independent Hardware Group (IHG) pillar in relation to its retail and manufacturing operations in Victoria based out of the Ravenhall Office.
The SHE function at Metcash is a central function, responsible for “shaping, servicing and safeguarding” our business when it comes to safety, health and the environment. The central SHE function develops the Metcash SHE Strategy and SHE Management System, and works with our business pillars, through a collaborative partnership approach, to cconnect Operations to the SHE Strategy and Management System through training, communications, coaching, advice and audit and support effective execution of the Strategy and System at site.
The primary focus of the role is to help drive a positive SHE culture, robust SHE governance and compliance and improved SHE performance by supporting the business to implement the Metcash SHE Strategy and SHE Management System.
The role requires strong leadership, constructive and positive behaviours and effective engagement of stakeholders including through collaboration and influence.

- Support IHG SA site leaders and other key stakeholders
- Coach and develop IHG SA site leaders in activities such as SHE engagements, critical risk reviews/control verification checks, incident and injury management and general safety, health and environment matters.
- Contribute to/support with the maintenance/continuous improvement of the SHE Management System as required.
- Support IHG SA sites to operate within the Metcash SHE Management System, including by supporting the site to, using templates/tools developed by SHE Team, develop, own and maintain/continuously improve documents/tools for the site, such as SHE Management Plans, SHE Improvement Plans, Traffic Management Plans, Chemical/Dangerous Goods Registers, etc. Ensure site SHE documentation is in line with SHE Management System frameworks.
- Support or participate in as required the conduct of SHE compliance audits
- In partnership with site leadership, conduct the Annual Management Review of SHE Management System
- Support as required in the preparation of monthly IHG SHE performance reports
- Facilitate as required SHE-related training at IHG SA sites.
- Monitor IHG SA SHE incidents (including near misses), and ensure incident management protocols are followed and robust investigations are completed for Level 3 and 4 incidents by SHE (Level 4) or site operational teams (Level 3), identifying root cause and contributing factors and actions in response.
- Building strong, collaborative relationships with IHG SA leadership and site leadership teams, including through attending and participating in relevant State leadership forums and relevant site forums and meetings, to influence and drive improved SHE culture, governance, compliance and performance across IHG’s operations in South Australia.
You’re Likely a Match If you have
- Tertiary qualifications in SHE or a related discipline such as legal or sciences.
- Understanding of relevant Australian and New Zealand safety, health and environmental legislation including national heavy vehicle legislation/CoR
- ICAM investigation trained/certified
- Sound understanding of a warehouse/retail environment
- Certificate IV in Training & Assessment (desirable)
- Ability to build and maintain strong relationships and achieve outcomes through collaboration and influence
